Product development guide

Prepare an OEM product brief

A useful brief gives the manufacturer enough context to assess feasibility, ask the right questions and separate confirmed requirements from open choices.

This operational checklist is general guidance. Product, claim, test, label and regulatory requirements depend on the selected category and target market.

01

Start with the commercial context

State where and how the product will be sold before choosing formula and packaging details.

  • Target country or region
  • Sales channel and intended consumer
  • Target retail position and launch timing
  • Initial quantity direction and reorder assumptions
02

Define the product direction

Describe the category, format, consumer benefit, benchmark references and non-negotiable requirements. Mark ideas as preferences when they are not fixed specifications.

  • Product category and format
  • Primary benefit and claim direction
  • Texture, fragrance, color and usage preferences
  • Ingredients to consider or avoid
  • Reference products and what should—or should not—be matched
03

Add packaging and approval inputs

Include desired capacity, primary pack, secondary pack, artwork status and the people who approve samples and specifications.
